Flags over Mars!
This short FREE Quickstart adventure is designed to allow players to take on the role of heroes from the John Carter of Mars stories as they encounter perilous adventures on Barsoom explore the rules of its 2d20 roleplaying system.
The adventure is set shortly after the events of A Princess of Mars and the decline of Helium’s long time rival, Zodanga. During this period, John Carter stays for years in Helium with his beloved Dejah Thoris, but few of his adventures during this time are described in Burrough’s work.
As the adventure begins, Carter is travelling with Dejah and several friends and allies by flier to meet with a delegation from a minor Red Martian kingdom, Voninka, that is seeking alliance with Helium. Voninka was a small satellite nation of Zodanga until the nation’s recent defeat at the hands of Helium. It now seeks new allies among Helium and its jeddak, a young but respected leader known as Corlan Nim, has requested a diplomatic meeting with representatives of Helium—the player heroes and their crew.
But all is not quite as it seems and this apparently simple diplomatic mission soon launches our heroes into a whirlwind adventure!
Prepare to experience the might and majesty of 2d20 adventures on the red planet in John Carter of Mars!
Modiphius just added a bundle of four digital books for their 2d20 game Conan: Adventures in Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of with a pretty good 46% discount, currently from $55.96 down to $29.99. This appears to be part of DTRPG’s “Why Not Try A Game You Haven’t Played Before” promotion, so presumably will not last forever, and perhaps only as long as the New Year sale for another 8 days.
Modiphius has started a crowdfunding effort for John Carter of Mars, a 2d20 roleplaying game set in the universe of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series. This appears to be, essentially, a pre-order offering and hype train, as opposed to a project actually needing to crowdfund to get done, and has already met the modest base funding goal, but may be of interest if you want to pay for the game in advance of the release, later this year. There’s a variety of packages, though I note there doesn’t appear to be a “borg cube” style collector’s monolith this time around. Still, looks interesting and lavish as a game from a glance!
John Carter of Mars – Adventures on The Dying World of Barsoom is a planetary romance tabletop role-playing game. We’ve created it under license and with the cooperation of the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the original Barsoom novels. We’ve also had guidance of Scott Tracy Griffin one of the leading scholars of his works to ensure utmost authenticity.
Using a pulp-action inspired narrative variant of Modiphius’ 2d20 system, Momentum, John Carter of Mars allows players to take the role of various adventurers and heroes as they travel, battle, and romance their way across the wondrous and dangerous world known to its natives as Barsoom. Play as John Carter, the princess Dejah Thoris or the fearsome Thark warrior Tars Tarkas – or create your own new heroes from a wide variety of options.
Modiphius has now released print versions of the core Conan Adventures books, including regular, limited and player’s guide editions, a first set of adventures, and dice set to the general public. This is a 2d20 game that was crowdfunded, but is now available at retailers and in print to everyone.
A new Star Trek Adventures Quickstart is available from Modiphius.

“We’ve received a message from Narendra Station that a runabout called the Susquehanna has gone missing in the Carina Nebula, deep within the Shackleton Expanse. The Susquehanna was investigating an unusual alien signal that originated from the nebula when all contact was lost. We have been ordered to enter the nebula, find the runabout, and determine the origin and cause of the alien signal. Starfleet has also advised that Romulan and Ferengi ships have been sighted in the region, so we should exercise caution since they may well have detected the alien signal as well.”

I’m a little late to the game, but I just watched the final episode of the first season, s01e13: Inquest, of Shield of Tomorrow, the Star Trek live-streamed roleplaying series, on Geek & Sundry Twitch or more exclusively on the private platform Project Alpha, using the new Star Trek Adventures RPG rules from Modiphius. I haven’t been able to catch it, it streamed after I was usually already asleep, the VODs are subscriber only, and if I notice that it’s being re-streamed I haven’t wanted to just jump in the middle … but, this was the final episode of the season, and I watched it.
Now, that’s some damned fine Star Trek. I mean, I realize that was the final episode for the season and so it wrapped up a lot from previous episodes, but that was intense and emotional. Damned near equivalent to some of the best broadcast Star Trek episodes I’ve watched. There was emotion, drama, and intrigue; there were callback to other movies and series; and a final surprise denouement full of hope for the future.
The emotional investment of players like Amy Dallen in the life of an organism encountered was on par with the best of Voyager in the episode Tuvix, which is the first and so far only episode of Star Trek that prompted me to write to congratulate cast and crew on an amazing job, just to put that into perspective. The drama and intrigue of the interaction with Starfleet Intelligence, and the effect on players like Hector Navarro, was on par with the best of Deep Space Nine in episodes featuring Section 31 or focused on Garak’s espionage and secrets. Furthermore, the ability to weave into the story elements from the movies and broadcast series created some fantastic business and dialogue for the players, and that’s something the best of episodes like Deep Space Nine’s Trials and Tribble-ations prove is a compelling experience for the audience and cast.
Seriously, Inquest made me remember how excellent Star Trek can really be when it reaches for those huge allegorical dilemmas in the human experience and while showing the emotional toll and toil those experiences place on those going through them. I appreciate the work done by the entire cast of players and the game master Eric Collin Campbell, as well as the crew on the shoot, for a job well damned done.
With season two tonight, as it moves to Monday nights, at an earlier 7pm PDT time slot, I may just have to stay up late to go with these fine people on their continuing voyages, and catch up on the rest when I can.

Modiphius, who recently have launched Star Trek Adventures, sent out an email with details about their upcoming crowdfunding effort for a John Carter tabletop gaming line. This will include an RPG, miniatures, and a board game. They’ve been working with the Edgar Rice Burroughs Estate and they seem to be serious about trying to do it right.
In the email, which you should go read now, they shared some pictures of suggested page layouts and miniatures, and there’s some gorgeous stuff happening, so I’d say sign up and stay in the loop for when the crowdfunding campaign starts up, they say in just a month or two!
The roleplaying game will be a gorgeous deluxe edition landscape book with stunning long artworks taking you across Barsoom whilst the miniatures will bring your favourite characters, villains and brave crews of their ships to life. Beyond that a board game will let you explore the adventures of John Carter and friends in new ways!
We’re making a final push now before aiming to get the project live at the end of August but our goal is to be able to ship the book and miniatures soon after the project so this date will shift to ensure we’re fully ready. Please bear with us, it’s going to be worth your wait.
I wonder if there’s going to be the equivalent of the Borg Cube Collector’s Edition for STA, which is awesomely out of my price range? Maybe a Martian airship? Also, this will use the same 2d20 system, so I’ll hope to hear about some riotous crossovers.
