Summary for the week ending Aug 5, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending August 5th, 2018.

Oh, wow. It’s been a week of technical difficulties, and it isn’t over yet. My machine has been crashing. Not just crashing, but randomly and intermittently snapping off. Completely powered off without warning or shutdown process. I’ve been trying to diagnose what’s going on, and I keep eliminating things that could be the cause, trying everything from adding a UPS to OS version to startup applications and so on, and am left scratching my head a bit. Right now I’m suspicious of the power supply and the graphics card. I’d definitely think it was the power supply, except, and this has me a bit baffled, the machine does not seem to crash when in safe mode; so perhaps this has something to do with the graphics card, which wouldn’t be used the same way in safe mode?

Ugh! It’s a mystery, and not the fun kind!

While in a bit of despair about the potential cost of repair or replacement, neither of which I can afford; I discovered that I have 1 week left of my extended AppleCare coverage! Wow, that’s a bright spot in troubling time, that is. So, I’ve been talking with AppleCare about what to do. It’s not fixed, but, you know, there’s at least some hope now.

With that said, somehow I managed to do a bunch of streaming in spite of the crashes, though I have not been scheduling posts to the Odd Order blog, as I just haven’t been thinking about that much whilst everything else is going on.

Welp. These days have been a snafu, perhaps even a fiasco, but at least it isn’t yet the fubar I feared it was.

Still, all is not well. I’m not sure I’ll be able to stream at all this week, and for as long as my main machine is down I am pretty much out of luck for doing much work. I’m limping along as I am able.

Wish me luck on getting all this resolved!

In other news, Gen Con happened in my extended neck of the woods. It was only a few hours away, but I just couldn’t make it happen. Maybe next year? I don’t know, but it would be awesome to go, to be sure!

Don’t forget that I’ve announced the call for submissions to the Odd Order anthology album for 2018, which is themed BIT NIBBLE BYTE!

Summary for the week ending Jul 22, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending July 22, 2018.

This last week I was on the struggle-bus trying to figure out technical issues. First, my machine kept powering down randomly. I thought I’d detected some patterns, but kept ruling things out. Not OS version, not current application, not a startup application, or anything else. Burn the candle at both ends and when the flame goes out somewhere in the middle then there is the fault. I ended up thinking that I might have a power issue, either in the power supply or in the actual supply from the wall. Strange to hope that there’s something wrong with the house wiring or the power to the neighborhood, but in many ways those faults would be better than having to replace the power supply in my machine; an out-of-warranty iMac all-in-one, with the nearest service center several towns away. So, I ordered a new UPS. To be fair, either way, I figured, I’ve been needing one anyway. There’s lots of thunderstorms here too, so I need one even more than I have before. Well, I’ve been running on the UPS for several days and, crossing my fingers, I have not yet had another power down issue. Solved? I don’t know, but I’m hoping.

O HAI UPS plz gib TEH POWER!

Then, on Saturday, the Murphy corollary that covers streamers and technology kicked in, and for some reason I couldn’t get audio to route from the Discord app to OBS anymore even though I’d not changed any settings … other than restoring the OS from backup, re-upgrading, and doing all kinds of things like that … um. Yeah. Anyhow: What. the. hell. So, for the Spelljammer game I had to resort to using Discord in a browser, which meant that push-to-talk on worked when the browser tab with Discord in it had focus. Oy! I survived, for the most part, but of course there were times I didn’t manage to get the focus correct and audio levels were not ideal. Oh, well. It’s not like that sort of thing is unexpected. Seriously. Streaming is the most technical-fault producing activity I’ve ever engaged in. The gremlins love to play tricks on streamers.

Anyhow, my machine was turned off for most of the week, as I just didn’t want to have something else go wrong, or for one of the power down events to damage something more than was already wrong.

Getting back to streaming has taken a hit. The weather has been super hot, so my machine has been over-heating; and it recently started to simply, randomly shutdown. Not reliable enough to use for anything. I’m currently on the struggle bus with my laptop for even doing this update. I’m not sure what to do. But, I’ll try a few things and hope for the best. If my machine is kaput, then I’m done streaming until I can come up with another machine, and that’s going to be painful to have to do, and take some time to accomplish. I’m in a bit of a funk, to be honest. Oh, well.

Hey, but, at least one of my fan theories was vindicated this weekend!

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending July 8, 2018.

Slowly getting back into the swing of things. I’m starting to try out streaming at noon US/Central, and finding which days I am able to stream then. I’ll keep working on finding the right schedule.

I played D&D and a tabletop board game this week. It was fun to set things back up to stream my IRL tabletop as I played a game. I’ve got a few ideas for how to do that better, but I’m thinking that might become a thing I do more. We’ll see!

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending May 28th, 2018.

This will be my last weekly summary before going on hiatus at the beginning of June. I’m moving across the country, traveling almost literally a reverse Oregon trail with everything I own. I’ve still got a few streams before I leave, but then I’ll be on the road. Here’s a funny graphic I created for my Twitch channel whilst I’m on hiatus.

Rigaroga is currently traveling the reverse Oregon trail

The trip will take about a week, and then I’ll be getting set up there. I’m not sure how long the whole thing will take, or when I’ll be back online. But, we’ll see!

This week I also posted an interview with streamer igetexcited, so be sure to check that out.

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending May 20th, 2018.

This week Danny and I started up a new series: Let’s Learn Roll20! I’m going to learn from Danny how to use Roll20, a digital tool that provides a virtual tabletop for playing pen-and-paper games online, from absolute Basics all the way through Advanced scripting! In the first episode, we introduce ourselves and then and then cover a bunch of cool things about rolling dice.

Each episode in the series will be up on my Twitch events, and the video of each episode will be there until they expire. I’ll also be keeping the series long term in a playlist over on my YouTube channel. And, the first episode is there now.

We streamed the first episode on Friday, and we’re going to do a couple more before I go on hiatus for the big move. So, we’ll get three episodes in and then continue the series when I’m back streaming.

Summary for the week ending May 13, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending May 13th, 2018.

I’ve been looking into things and noticed that in a month, I’ll be a reasonable distance from both Gen Con and Gary Con. Like, for the first time ever, I think I might, just maybe, be able to go. The big issue will be saving up enough money to go, and stay whilst there. I could only go for a few days at most, but, hey, it’s at least possible!

Also, I’ve noticed that there’s a couple of FLGS, with supplies and events, in a larger town that will be just 40 minutes from where I’ll be. So, I might be able to do scheduled tabletop events, and might even be able to find a real live group of players to stream whilst we play in person. It’s something I’m definitely going to see about when I’m finally there.

This week I also posted an interview I did with streamer R0zu! So be sure to check that out.

Summary for the week ending May 6, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending May 6th, 2018.

So, I’ve had to drop out of my D&D Curse of Strahd group because of a particular player, which has made me realize that I have to make a clear statement about groups I participate in. I’ve added an “Agreement” section to my LFG pages; but TLDR, I hope everyone in my groups can all not only agree to be on stream and recorded, but also to abide by Wheaton’s Law and Twitch Community Guidelines, at the table, whether on stream or not.

I realized that I was up front and clear about people needing to agree to streaming, but not the other stuff. It wasn’t the agreement to be streamed that was an issue. It was the don’t be a dick or a racist that this person failed to meet. I’m a little surprised at having to make a clear statement about that, but … I guess it’s not really a surprise.

This month I’m getting ready for a big move across country. So, I’m quite distracted by this looming event, and it’s my project all month long to get everything left to get ready ready. I’ll still be streaming, but not every day like I was in April. Then, in the beginning of June, I’ll be unable to stream until I get where I’m going and have fast Internet installed. I’m not entirely sure how long all that will take. I’ll hope it will be quick, but there’s no way to know yet. I’m looking forward to getting everything set up so I can start streaming again, with a new schedule, from a new timezone!

I’ve mentioned this before but I’m essentially doing a reverse Oregon trail for this one. It’s a long trip, and I’m moving to a region where I’ve never lived. It’s daunting, but I have hope it will work out for the best! I hope the cats and I make it safely there and can hardly wait to get settled in the other side.

I’ve put Cooking with Rigaroga! on hiatus until after the move, but I’m looking forward to figuring out how to continue that with actual groceries from a store, and my own recipes. But, for the rest of this month, I’m pretty much trying to clear out the fridge and freezer of all the stuff that isn’t shelf stable. Food for me this month will mostly be a bit boring!

We’re going to switch to weekly sessions of W40k Roleplay Deathwatch for a little while, as schedules currently permit us to do so. There was a session this past Sunday, and we’re doing on next as well. We’re in the thick of it now, and it turns out, somehow, we’re still in our first day on out current planet! So much has happened already, I was sure more game time had passed across our episodes so far.

I’m also working on a new series with Danny, who runs the W40k Roleplay Deathwatch campaign, on how to use Roll20, a digital tool that provides a virtual tabletop for playing pen-and-paper games online, everything from the very basics to advanced scripting. We’ll be doing the first couple episodes this month, and then plan to keep going after the move. We’re going to stream each episode, though they will be a bit shorter than a normal stream would be; and plan on the first episode on May 18th.

I’ve wanted to figure out Roll20 for a while, and I tried to use it for my solo RPG videos; but I found it a bit bizarre. If it starts to make sense, and I get a feel for it, maybe I’ll even start trying to run my own games. We’ll see!

In other news, I also recently added a shock mount to my Blue Yeti mics, which I hope will help a bit, but mostly with avoiding the cats constantly bumping into the mic.

Summary for the week ending Apr 29, 2018

Here’s a summary of activity for the week ending April 29th, 2018.

Saturday was International Tabletop Day, so several of my D&D Spelljammer buddies and I decided to do a mini-marathon. We started at 4am my time, and, wow, I was tired and wiped out when we finished that afternoon!

We had players from across Europe and North America playing a tabletop Space Hulk game, carefully marching through a ship to rescue people from the Genestealers, followed by an intermission with a video on how to play my NecronomiCards solo variant, and then another session of D&D Spelljammer actual play in our ongoing campaign, where we had a bit of slaughter in Jurassic Park.

This weekend also marked my penultimate days as Nomad’s Streamer of the Month for April 2018. Today, as I write this, my reign of terror has ended. The SOTM is dead, long live the SOTM! I’m super grateful for being selected, for the support from all the Nomads this last month, and I’m excited to find out who the new SOTM is for May.

Rigaroga Nomads Streamer of the Month April 2018

Since finding out that I was selected by the Nomads as SOTM, I’ve streamed every day last month. During that time of extra activity, I started up an experimental Cooking with Rigaroga! series, reached 250 total hours of streamed content since I started back in 2014, and hit the additional milestone of having streamed for 25 unique days in the month.

For several weeks, I’ve been doing an IRL cooking stream three times a week. It been fun to experiment with a “remote” streaming setup in my kitchen, using my cell phone and a tablet.

I had some technical issues with audio, and experimented with that for a while; ended up getting a new lavalier mic and discovering that being plugged into the wall socket caused some truly awful sound interference. But, as I did it, thing got better! I also had come great fresh food, and fun conversations with those who came to hang out with me whilst I cooked and ate dinner.

Rigaroga Twitch Cooking with Rigaroga

Later today will be the last Cooking with Rigaroga stream for a while, as I’m putting that series on hiatus until some time after mid-June, but it’s been super fun and I look forward to doing more of those again, in a few months.

I reached a total of 250 hours of streaming content, from my very first stream back in September 2014, through an hiatus whilst stuck without bandwidth, through this recent period of increased activity since August 2017 until now. Most of my content has been in the last few months, as I’ve been streaming more regularly and longer, especially with the three tabletop roleplaying series I’ve been participating in this year.

Rigaroga Twitch stream for 250 hours

Streaming regularly, on a regular schedule, and for longer periods, is something that I’ve struggled to do. But, being the SOTM has been a great chance to try harder. I had this audience of fellow streamers putting in the extra effort of supporting me and I didn’t want to waste that!

I passed the Twitch achievement of having 25 unique days of streaming in April because I was on every day.

Rigaroga Twitch stream for 25 unique days

Now that it’s a new month, I’m going to pull back a bit so I can also focus on some other things I need to do in the next couple of months. Primarily, that is getting ready for a big move across country, moving across country, and then settling once I get across country.

Amusingly, I’m essentially doing a reverse Oregon trail for this one. It’s a long trip, and I’m moving to a region I’ve never lived. It’s daunting, but I have hope it will work out for the best!

Also, I’m looking forward to getting everything set up so I can start streaming again, from a new timezone!
